Mohammed Shami's Test record on Australian soil

Mohammed Shami has played a crucial role in the Indian fast bowling lineup in Test cricket since his debut in 2013. Shami has gained recognition for his exceptional seam position and his skill in generating movement, even on perfectly flat pitches, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished fast bowlers of his generation.

The 34-year-old fast bowler from Bengal has long been India's primary choice in the longest format of cricket, excelling in both home and away matches.

Shami has been instrumental in the Indian Cricket Team's performances against Australia. He played a crucial role in India’s maiden test series victory on Australian soil in 2018-19. He was the top wicket-taker for India during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, which took place in Australia.

Unfortunately, Shami was not included in India's squad for the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 due to an ankle injury. However, the BCCI is diligently overseeing his rehabilitation, with the possibility of his return for the final two test matches of the series.

On that note, let examine Mohammed Shami's Test performance in Australia.

Shami has played in eight Test matches in Australia to date, taking 31 wickets with a commendable bowling average of 32.16. The fast bowler has achieved two five-wicket hauls in Test cricket while playing in Australia.

Shami registered his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket in Australia in 2014, during the fourth and final match of the series held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He stood out as the sole bright spot for India amidst an otherwise disappointing bowling display by the visitors. The Indian fast bowler claimed figures of 5 for 112, taking crucial wickets of Shane Watson and Chris Rogers, thereby limiting Australia to a first innings total of 572.

His second five-wicket haul in Australia came in 2018 in Perth, during the second innings of the match. Shami concluded the innings with impressive bowling figures of 6 for 56. India was defeated in the Test match; however, Shami's impressive bowling performance ensured that the team remained competitive despite having given up a 43-run lead in the first innings.
